Tunisia could be kicked out of next month’s World Cup in Qatar if the country’s government intervenes in football affairs, FIFA has warned.
FIFA member associations must not interfere in legal and political matters.
This warning comes after a repeat from the Minister of Youth and Sports of Tunisia, Kamel Deguiche, about the possibility of “breaking the federal bureaux”.
Fifa sees their comments as an attempt to interfere in the work of the national football federation (FTF), and has asked the latter to clarify about the attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the country and the threat to destroy their office.
The Zurich organization also reminded the FTF that member organizations are “legally obliged to conduct their affairs independently and without the influence of third parties”.
“Any failure to comply with these regulations may result in sanctions under FIFA regulations, including the suspension of the relevant organization,” said a letter from Kenny Jean-Marie, FIFA’s director of member associations, to the FTF secretary general, Wajdi Aouadi.
Fifa’s ban may mean that no Tunisian club or national side can play in continental or international competitions.
Next month, the 2004 African champions are expected to meet France, Denmark and Australia in Group D in Qatar.
The Carthage Eagles have never made it past the group stage in their last five World Cup finals appearances, and will open their campaign against the Danes on November 22.
