Australia and Argentina have criticized Fifa for scheduling their last 16 match three days after their final World Cup group matches, saying the short round treats players like ” robot”.
The Socceroos defeated Denmark on Wednesday night and face a high-profile elimination game with Lionel Messi and Argentina on Saturday at 10pm local time.
Argentina have even less time to recover, having played their 2-0 win against Poland from 10pm – four hours after Australia’s match against Denmark – in a situation described as ” crazy” from his coach, Lionel Scaloni.

Qatar: beyond the football

This is a World Cup like no other. For the past 12 years, the Guardian has reported on issues surrounding Qatar 2022, from corruption and human rights abuses to the treatment of migrant workers and discriminatory laws. The best of our journalism is gathered on our dedicated home page Qatar: Beyond the Football for those who want to delve into issues beyond the pitch.
The Guardian’s report goes far beyond what is happening in the field. Support our investigative journalism today.
At Russia 2018, teams that qualified for the knockout stage were given at least four days between their last group game and the last 16.
“How can the Fifa organization [do this] in such a prestigious tournament,” Socceroos assistant coach René Meulensteen said. “The four-day turnovers were already short and after the group stages they are even shorter. If you want a high-quality performance in a World Cup, you think they could have managed a little differently.
“It’s the same for the other team, I have to say that. But we have almost no time to let everything sink in. It’s recovery, recovery and preparing their brains again for this challenge.”
The two teams played their three group games four days apart as part of Qatar 2022’s condensed 29-day schedule – three fewer than were used to stage the tournament 2018 and in Brazil four years earlier.
The regular schedule of 32 days with five weekends was not available due to the compromise that Fifa made with European leagues and clubs when it abandoned the tournament in the middle of its domestic seasons to avoid the oppressive heat of Qatar summer.
The unusual November-December slot also means clubs do not release their players until a week before the first match, a significant decrease from the extended preparation previously offered to national teams.
In 2018, Australia had members of their squad at a pre-tournament camp in Turkey more than a month before the tournament, and then made the short flight to Russia five days before their first match against France.
This time, some had played for their clubs less than seven days before their opening World Cup match. The unique circumstances have prompted the international players’ union, Fifpro, to warn the accumulated workload – along with the hot conditions – has created an unprecedented risk of injury.
“It is something that Fifa should consider, that we are not robots, that we are human and that we need to recover,” Socceroos defender Milos Degenek said. “That we can’t just play day after day. And not just me, [it’s] especially the boys who have played three in a row, they have a turn again.”
Scaloni, too, was critical after the win on Wednesday night, which confirmed the progression of Argentina as winners of Group C and set the date with Australia – the finalists of Group D.
“Today we’re happy, but not euphoric, because it’s crazy that we’re playing in just over two days,” he said. “I really can’t understand this. It’s almost 1 o’clock, tomorrow is Thursday. We could have had more rest.
“I want to be clear that it does not seem right to me that we only have two and a half days of rest after being the first in the group. These conditions are not great.”
