Eight teams that missed out on this year’s FIFA World Cup

Last Updated on October 11, 2022 by

Even before the first kicks at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, fans who haven’t followed the qualifiers will be in for a shock: current European champions and four-time World Cup winners Italy will not be among the participants.

While the failure to qualify has left the squad with some embarrassment, it’s not the only big name missing from Qatar’s 2022 roster.

Several other major teams from Europe, South America and Africa will also follow the tournament from home.

Here’s a look at some of those parties that won’t be on the plane to Qatar in November:

Contents

Italy

Italy

Best Show at World Championships: Winners (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006)

Italy missed out on securing a spot after losing 92 minutes to North Macedonia in their play-off semi-final in March. The fact that they were in the play-offs was also surprising, given their Euro 2020 triumph last year and a string of good results in the qualifying rounds leading up to the tournament.

However, in the next five games, they only won once and were held on four draws. A second-place finish behind Switzerland took them to the play-offs where they failed to score and missed the World Cup for the second time in a row.

Colombia

Colombia

Best Show at World Cup: Quarter Finals (2014)

With a former Golden Boot winner of the World Cup, James Rodriguez, and impressive performances in the last two editions of the tournament, Colombia was one of the favorites to secure a spot in Qatar 2022.

The South American side finished sixth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, one point behind Peru who took the playoff spot after the top four teams qualified automatically.

Rodriguez, who played club football in Qatar for a year, shared his disappointment, saying he was in “deep pain” in a lengthy social media post after his team failed to qualify.

Sweden

Sweden

Best Show at World Championship: Runners-up (1958)

Sweden has been part of 12 of the 21 World Cups. The country hosted the tournament in 1958 when the team achieved its best result reaching the final where it lost another high-scoring match to Brazil.

The 2018 quarter-finalists’ journey to Qatar was derailed when they lost three of their six matches in the second leg of qualifiers last year. They finished second in their group behind Spain and faced Poland in the play-offs.

The play-off match was held in Poland and the home team took full advantage of the support by winning 2-0 and putting an end to the youthful Swedish side to move to Qatar.

Chile

Chile

Best Show at World Championships: Third Place (1962)

Chile has been present at the World Cup since the first edition in 1930. They hosted the tournament in 1962 and finished third.

In recent editions (1998, 2010 and 2014), Chile reached the round of 16 stage. Those appearances came with players like Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel and Alexis Sanchez. With the waning form of these players, Chile is struggling to achieve favorable results.

They won just one of their last four Qatar 2022 qualifiers. Chile then attempted to disqualify Ecuador by claiming Ecuadorian Byron Castillo was Colombian and ineligible to represent Ecuador.

However, FIFA stated that the player had permanent Ecuadorian nationality and was eligible to represent the country under the rules.

Nigeria

Nigeria

Best Show at World Championships: Round of 16 (1994, 1998, 2014)

Nigeria made their World Cup debut in 1994 and became an instant hit with the fans for their attacking style of play and entertaining goal celebrations.

The Super Eagles led their group but were knocked out of the tournament in the round of 16 after a stunning comeback from Italy led by Roberto Baggio.

Since then, the Super Eagles have only missed the 2006 tournament before making another comeback when the World Cup was played in South Africa four years later.

This time, Nigeria’s dreams of playing for a large expatriate Nigerian population were dashed as they drew both play-off legs against Ghana. In the second leg of the draw, Ghana qualified for Qatar on an away-goal basis.

Best Show at World Championships: Fourth (1966 as USSR), Quarter-finals (2018)

The only politically forced expulsion from the 2022 World Cup is Russia. FIFA announced the team’s exclusion from all competitions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.

Russia was one of the favorites to qualify from Europe, building on its run during the 2018 edition, where it reached the quarter-finals. Russia appealed the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but later withdrew it.

The team’s history at the World Cup has been split in two. First as the Soviet Union until the 1990 tournament. Later, Russia qualified for three World Cups until 2014, before hosting the 2018 edition, where they were eliminated on penalties.

Best Show at World Cup: Group Stage (1934, 1990, 2018)

With a World Cup taking place in the Middle East, Mohamed Salah at the head of the team and a large expat population in Qatar, Egypt would have enjoyed their chances of qualifying for the 2022 event.

However, their biggest star Salah missed his penalty, along with two others, when Egypt drew against Senegal in the play-off.

Egypt has failed to make it past the group stage in all three World Cups they have competed in. The 2018 edition had a disappointing end as Salah was not fully fit due to a shoulder injury.

Best Show at World Championships: Round of 16 (2014)

It was one of the most dramatic finishes of the World Cup qualifiers and one that stunned the world.

Algeria were on the cusp of making it to Qatar 2022 after scoring Cameroon’s late extra time in their play-off match.

However, Karl Toko Ekambi scored seconds before the final whistle and booked his place on away goals.

Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi remained stunned and inconsolable as Cameroon celebrated their return to the tournament.
