Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Golden Glove at the World Cup in Qatar but sparked controversy for his actions when the Albiceleste beat France in the final

Argentina’s World Cup heroes were greeted by thousands in Buenos Aires

FIFA has confirmed it is opening an investigation into Argentina’s football federation over the actions of their players and staff around the World Cup final.

Argentina beat France on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar in December. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty in the shootout, while Aurelien Tchouameni was also off target after being fouled by the Aston Villa stopper.

The tense game had a number of flashpoints both before and after the penalty shootout, with Martinez also attracting criticism for his antics after the win. Now, nearly a month after Argentina’s victory, another penalty could be on the way.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentine Football Association for possible violations of articles 11 (Offensive behavior and violation of the principles of fair play) and 12 (Misconduct by players and officials) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, as well as article 44. of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Regulations in relation to the Media and Marketing Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, during the Argentina v France FIFA World Cup™ final,” FIFA said in a statement.

Argentina isn’t the only national soccer federation in trouble, judging by the governing body’s latest disciplinary update. Proceedings were also initiated against the Croatian Football Association following, as FIFA stated: “possible violations of Articles 13 (Discrimination) and 16 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the match Croatia – Morocco FIFA World Cup™”. Croatia and Morocco drew in the group stage before meeting again in the third-place game.

FIFA also announced punishments for three FAs for their actions during the group stage. Ecuador, Mexico and Serbia were fined varying amounts from CHF 20,000 (£17,000) to CHF 100,000, and all three federations were also given partial or full stadium bans.

Martinez, who was also Argentina’s goalkeeper for their 2021 Copa America triumph, has since returned to club duty. The 30-year-old returned to Aston Villa on January 4 against Wolves and also played in Friday’s win over Leeds.

Tottenham and France captain Hugo Lloris has taken aim at his opponent after announcing his international retirement. Lloris helped lead France to glory in 2018 but could not repeat the feat in 2022.

“There are some things I cannot do. Making a fool of myself in goal, picking up the opposition and crossing the line… I just can’t do that,” said the veteran after confirming his 145th game for Les Bleus would be his last.

“I’m too rational and honest a man to go that way. I don’t know how to win that way, although I really didn’t want to lose that way.”
