If there’s one thing Argentinian fans have learned at this World Cup, it’s that you shouldn’t rest on your laurels when you’re 2-0 up. But after a dramatic penalty shootout, there was excitement in Buenos Aires that Argentina would take home football’s most coveted trophy.

After the game fans flocked to the Obelisk in central Buenos Aires, the streets filled with a carnival cacophony of cheers, car horns, cumbia music and loudspeakers. People start an impromptu drumming game with overturned paint pails and cans, while beef slices grill on asados (barbecues), the aroma of which fills the sunny afternoon air.
Throughout this tournament, there was a feeling that the Argentine national soul needed to win. The country has emerged from a biting economic recession, a currency crunch, and inflation that was close to 100%. Buenos Aires has had one of the world’s longest Covid lockdowns. Last week vice president and two-term former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was sentenced to six years in prison on corruption charges, a verdict that sharpened political divisions.
Under these circumstances, La Scaloneta – as the team is affectionately called – bringing home the trophy offers an opportunity for people to put aside their differences and ties.
Early in the tournament, fans woke up at the break of dawn to their televisions as the team unexpectedly lost their first game to Saudi Arabia. In the quarter-finals Argentina let go of a 2-0 lead against the Netherlands but won on penalties, and after they breezed through the semi-finals against Croatia it felt like their star was on the rise.
Before the final, the Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, tweeted to his French counterpart: “Dear friend Emmanuel Macron, I love you very much and I wish you all the best for the future.
