How Alvarez is proving key for Argentina?
Argentina v France (Sun 15:00 GMT)

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has called Julian Alvarez “spectacular” and “extraordinary” after the 22-year-old’s brace against Croatia helped them to the World Cup final.
Manchester City’s Alvarez took his tally to four, one behind joint top scorers Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
“No one imagined that Julian would have the participation and importance he has shown,” Messi said.
“The help he’s given us has been absolutely spectacular.”

But it’s not all about Lionel Messi.
There is another in the Argentina camp who is proving to be key for boss Lionel Scaloni…
‘Final is too tough to call’
Argentina v France (Sun 15:00 GMT)
The final is too hard to call, it could go either way. It’s during the day.
One-off finals can twist and turn on a bit of luck or a moment of brilliance from someone like Lionel Messi or Kylian Mbappe, or even both.
It’s really hard to predict.
Personally, I am a huge admirer of Messi and I make no apologies for that because he has given me great joy. Whatever happens to him in the finals, he has confirmed his status as right up there as one of the game’s all-time greats.
His achievements have been staggering. Even in his quiet game, he does three or four things that will always take your breath away.
He plays with more freedom because of winning the Copa America – I think that was a big weight off his back. He plays with the joy we’ve seen in years.
I would love to see Argentina win it for that reason, but France would also be worthy winners.

It would have been nice to see Morocco in the final, just because of their fans and their coach. For all they know, they have probably been the team of the tournament, because no one expected it.
What it means for their continent, what it means for the justification of expanding the WC, whether you think it is right or wrong. They have been huge.
But when you have a player like Lionel Messi playing like he has been in this tournament – I’ve seen Maradona – and now just to see Messi play like that. He has probably played better in individual bursts for Barcelona, but just watching this new model Messi, in the twilight of his career, destroy a very good Croatian defence. He is one of the greatest players of all time.
I just hope as a purist and a Messi fan that he wins on Sunday.
It is probably the final that Fifa would be fair.

We are so lucky to see Lionel Messi.
The genius of him, and we’re talking about who’s the best, I think he is.
He does things that others can’t even see. He scores all these wonderful goals and he assists.
He only has to see feet and he sees a pass. It’s a real genius.
‘What happens will depend a lot on Messi & Mbappe’
Argentina v France (Sun 15:00 GMT)
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live
I’m the kind of speaker who will try people who make this collective game into individuals.
However, on this occasion it is a World Cup where these two teams have played in almost exactly the same way.
Let’s not make things happen, let’s nullify the rival and let’s wait for our star’s moment. This is what has happened to Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
What happens on Sunday depends a lot on the performances of the two players.
It won’t be one of those games where one side dominates and one of the two has 10 chances. These will be the two or three moments that have brought them to the final so far, let’s see how they define those moments. It will make one legendary and the other just hopeful.
Mbappe looking to haunt Argentina again…
Argentina v France (Sun 15:00 GMT)
One player French fans will hope remains untouched by the virus spreading through the French camp is Kylian Mbappe.
He is looking to steal the show, just as he did when France faced Argentina and played a seven-goal thriller at the 2018 World Cup.

But there is some bad news for France.
Defenders Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate are the latest players to be affected by a virus spreading through the French camp, the Daily Mail reports.
Both players started in France’s 2-0 semi-final win over Morocco on Wednesday night.
Center back Dayot Upamecano and midfielder Adrien Rabiot missed that game after suffering from the illness earlier in the week.

French football expert Julien Laurens says that France “can field a
good match” ahead of the World Cup final against Argentina.
“I want France to win another [World Cup] to go back to back, that is
very rare, it’s only happened twice in the history of the game,” Laurens told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“For us to do it again in Doha would be exceptional because it is like that
hard to do.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s final, Laurens believes France cannot
underestimate the threat that is Lionel Messi.
