American Mikaela Shiffrin equaled compatriot Lindsey Vonn’s women’s world championship record by claiming her 82nd victory in the second giant slalom event in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on Sunday.

Shiffrin won with a combined time of one minute, 52.53 seconds, finishing 0.77 seconds ahead of second-place Federica Brignone of Italy.

The 27-year-old is now four wins short of Ingemar Stenmark’s overall record of 86 World Cup wins.

“I was so nervous this run,” Shiffrin said. “I have a rash on my face, I was so nervous!

“I don’t know why, maybe it’s because of 82. I just wanted to ski well… I can’t believe it.

“It was a game but it was pretty fantastic conditions and I got a report from the coaches saying everything is fully attacking so you have to go for it.

“I’ve been in this position (before) and I’ve given it away and today I wanted to go for it.”

Shiffrin, who debuted as a 17-year-old, leads the overall WC standings by 419 points from Petra Vlhova.

Stenmark has the next record in his sights; the Swede dominated the men’s slalom from 1975 until his retirement in 1989.

Vonn, who enjoyed her own 14-year career, retired after the 2019 season.
