Punter wins £15k in £10 World Cup – but Coral ‘refuses to pay’

Last Updated on January 3, 2023 by

One punter thought he had won nearly £15,000 after betting just £10 on a series of World Cup bets – only for one of Britain’s biggest bookmakers to refuse to pay out. Liam Manifold had already planned how to spend the money when Coral said he would not hand over the winnings.

The 30-year-old was at odds of 1,495 to one after predicting on November 11 that Argentina would win, Lionel Messi would be named player of the tournament and that France would also reach the final. The delighted maintenance engineer hurried back to the Horninglow bookmaker the day after the final – only to be left empty-handed.

A spokesman for Coral said the events are “closely related to each other, so the prices offered individually cannot be included in a multiple bet”. He said the company had made a “very fair and generous offer for the bet settlement” – said for Liam to have been just £660.

Liam, from Tutbury, planned to buy his disabled father a new scooter with the money, as well as saving some for the future. He said the company should pay as his bet was accepted with no problem.

“I went to withdraw the bet and they said it shouldn’t have been done and they offered me £660 for it,” he said.

“I went through their grievance system, there is no leeway. I went to an independent grievance committee and am waiting for their response.

“Since then several companies have contacted me saying if it was their company they would pay. When I placed the bet the guy behind the counter said it was fine. Now they are saying it is a related bet.

“There are now two weeks left until the final and it looks like I’m getting nowhere. If there is an error, it’s their fault for taking the bet. It’s very frustrating.

“Just under £15,000 for a major betting company is a penny for them but for me it’s a life changing sum of money. My dad is disabled so I was going to buy him a new disabled scooter and keep the rest in savings.”

A spokesman for Coral said: “These three events are all closely related to each other so the prices offered individually cannot be included in a multiple bet. If Argentina and France reach the final then the chances of Argentina winning is clearly very high. shorter than at the beginning. If Argentina has won the World Cup, the chances of Messi being the best player of the tournament will be slim.

“So we settled the bet as fairly as possible, paying on the highest priced event, an Argentina v France final, at 22/1, and then based on that, we applied the price of Argentina winning the final which was 10/11 before the game, and then based on Argentina winning the cup, we apply an overly generous price on Messi to be player of the tournament at 1/2, as the odds of that happening should Argentina have won the World Cup would have been much shorter.

“The prices in the bulletin were written by the customer and not the official. We settled the bet in accordance with our terms and conditions and made a very fair and generous offer for settlement of the bet which exceeds what the chances of such an eventuality would have been if a customer had ordered specific highs for the rush on November 11th.
