After a gap of 12 years, the football World Cup returned for its fourth edition.

The destruction, tragedy and political upheaval caused by World War II affected every European nation. In other parts of the world, the after-effects were also felt which is why it took time for FIFA to find a willing host.

South America, who had not hosted the tournament since the first edition, took advantage of this opportunity and Brazil was chosen to host its first World Cup.

The qualification for the competition was complicated for financial and political reasons. The defending champions of Italy had a crisis of their own and the Superga air disaster resulted in the loss of some of Italy’s biggest football stars. The team eventually participated but with a weakened squad.
