World Cup 2022: How Argentina’s chaotic celebrations unfolded

Last Updated on December 21, 2022 by

Argentina could be waking up from its biggest ever landing – at least if the number of enthusiasts on the streets of Buenos Aires on Tuesday is anything to go by.

There is no denying that Argentina really wanted to bring home the World Cup. The intensity of the feeling after each game during the tournament was a testament to that, the commitment of the fans to celebrate every goal scored.

Argentinians’ pride is multi-layered. Yes, their third World Cup win is an achievement in itself, but it was much more than that – in Lionel Messi they have a footballer who is competing with God-like Diego Maradona. How could he not take home the only trophy he didn’t have – Leo wanted it.

But this is a country that also wanted to develop – a chance to dream, to smile, to have fun. Argentina is facing a chronic economic crisis and with rising inflation, each day becomes more difficult. This match was an opportunity to switch off and back off – and wow, did they do that.

“We have suffered a lot in the past years,” one Argentine told me. “It’s the first time we have something to celebrate.”

Sunday’s celebrations were huge – a party that happened in the center of Buenos Aires, repeated all over the country. But Tuesday’s celebrations overshadowed them. It was, according to the media in the country, the biggest party in the history of the world.

“Today the people don’t care if they eat or not,” said one who was happy. “If people are happy and happy, the money doesn’t matter. People are happy to spend today.”

With around 5 million people on the streets of Buenos Aires, they started early – Even at 8am there were many people wearing their Messi 10 shirts, already kip on the park benches, before the event took place.

It didn’t take long for a few people to see the parade go by – a small bus carrying the team against the rest of the country clamoring to see them. But that mattered little to the majority of Argentines – this was for enjoying the sun, public holidays and time – Argentine time.

With so many people crowded around the Obelisk in the center of Buenos Aires, it became clear that the parade would not be able to make it through the thick crowds. It doesn’t matter, the parade changed course, people ran towards them. When the warplanes flew over, the cheerleaders cheered. They celebrated again when the team left the bus and took a helicopter to wave to supporters from afar.

The team was the reason for the celebration, but in other ways it was just the spark – the flame of the fiesta kept burning and will for a while yet.

This is a very proud country, but it has problems. Argentinians are often ridiculed for being more European than their South American counterparts. But this victory over France made them very proud of being South America. It was inspiring and brought the region together – albeit short, welcome.

And like all good parties, they tend to end in chaos – overjoyed fans jumping on the team bus, drunken Porteños and piles of trash made it clear.
