‘Much less relaxed this time’
Things are heating up in Le Petit Poucet bar-restaurant on Place de Clichy, as waiters clear lunch and fans prepare for the match with a few post-lunch drinks. Lots of tricolors and one or three Griezmann shirts.
Fanny, 27, is getting nervous: “This time we are much less relaxed than four years ago. Argentina is a country that lives for football and they have Messi!
“France must play together as a group. This is the only way.”
Damien, 32, says: “There is so much support for Messi and Argentina around the world, this could be playing against us. Even in the stadium, our fans will be vastly outnumbered.
“But fortunately our players have a lot of experience with big marches like this. It will be difficult.”
Both predict a 2-1 win for France.
‘Argentina will attack Hernandez’
BBC Sport South American football expert
The return of Angel Di Maria means Scaloni’s bluff has paid off. He made everyone think he was going to play three centre-backs and have Di Maria in reserve, which never made much sense to me.
Di Maria on the right, I imagine, of a 4-4-2, and Argentina will attack Theo Hernandez. He’s very good forward but couldn’t get close to Saka in the quarter-finals and France struggled on the left side against Morocco.
Argentina think they can win the game with Di Maria teaming with Messi having an attack the Frenchman left, Argentina right.
‘Argentina team represents the fans’
Argentine football journalist Nicolás Rotnitzky speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Messi is showing that he really feels it and really wants to win and that’s why people are behind the team and want him to win.
“The team plays in a team that people feel represented by them. You see them running, you see them playing with the ball, trying to attack but knowing how to defend. It’s an intelligent team. We talk about how pragmatic France are but I think that Argentina is also pragmatic, will fit the game.
They have different ways of playing depending on the game and their rivals, so I think all of that puts the Argentines behind the team and that’s why everything is better and the atmosphere is absolutely brilliant.”

JM: Probably the most even final in recent years. It’ll be fine.
‘Messi already level with Maradona’
Video content
Former winger Maxi Rodriguez made three World Cup appearances for Argentina but was an unused substitute the last time his country reached the final, when they were defeated by Germany in extra time in 2014.
But who can forget his sensational volley against Mexico in 2006.
Speaking at the FIFA Legends Cup event in Doha, the former Liverpool player said: “It’s a final we have to play in, no matter how we win, but we hope to lift the trophy.
“Winning or losing the game will be decided in the small details and each team has its weaknesses.”
On the Lionel Messi-Diego Maradona debate, he added: “Messi wins today or not, it doesn’t matter because he’s already on the same level as Maradona”.
Inside Messi’s quest for World Cup 2022 glory
For almost two minutes into the 70th minute of Tuesday’s semi-final against Croatia, a barely mobile Lionel Messi stood wide of the halfway line waiting for the ball.
Eventually receiving it, he started running alongside centre-back Josko Gvardiol, approaching the edge of the area, before turning around to realize the 20-year-old defender was catching up to him.
As he approached the baseline, Messi spun and appeared to backtrack, before turning again, accelerating and gaining those crucial meters which left Gvardiol in his wake. Julian Alvarez’s cross was right-footed and the centre-forward became the beneficiary of another stroke of genius from Messi to confirm Argentina’s place in Sunday’s World Cup final against France.
Making consistent and correct choices is one of the main reasons Messi’s career has reached heights no one has ever reached – and why he now rests so much during matches.
At 35 he is more than ever a player of moments in a World Cup of moments. A man for the occasion.
As he directed the Argentine supporters from the center of the pitch, just like he directed the game, you knew the dimension of the moment. The player who won almost everything now has one last chance to win the biggest prize of all.

Andrew Macartney: This Argentinian team will play for Argentina and for Messi. England put Mbappe in a box where he stayed for the match, not sure Argentina can do that.
‘I want to know if we can curse Messi’
Frank Leboeuf, 1998 World Cup winner, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘No, no, I’m not nervous [about the final]. I’m fine, I’ve already won it. It’s up to them!
“I’m excited to see the match obviously because of the final and also the Messi thing. It’s like destiny for him so I want to know if we can curse him a little. But I have no favorites, it’s a very exciting match, an exciting final and hopefully the best team wins and I’ll be fine with it.
“I’m very happy with some players, Rabiot, Mbappe, Giroud, Griezmann are doing great and Lloris too. In defense we still have a lot of weaknesses and you never know what will happen before a match. So I don’t feel we can be as strong as one time, but overall I’m happy with the performance.”
Messi in the middle?
BBC Sport at the iconic stadium in Lusail
The volume here just kicked up a notch or two when players from Argentina emerged. They are currently warming up in the shape of a giant circle – it looks like Lionel Messi should be in the middle, but he’s not.

Deafening reception for Argentina
BBC Sport head writer at Lusail Stadium
The Argentina players have come out to warm up and thunderous roars spread around Lusail Stadium. We already heard them when Lionel Messi’s face flashed on the big screens as he got off the team bus.
Goalkeeper Emi Martinez has been out for some time and appears relaxed, recognizing the fans in the crowd.
Kirkland on Martinez v Llloris
Former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland also joined the Football News Show to discuss Emi Martinez and Hugo Llloris, the two players who will be in the sticks later this afternoon.
Kirkland also says “this is the final the tournament deserved”.

‘Dream final for PSG’
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live
For PSG, this is obviously their dream final. They always wanted it to be one of Neymar and Messi versus Kylian, so they got their wish. At first this is the ending most people would have wanted.
We just don’t know. I think if Leo wins, the momentum will be so great that he can take that team and win the Champions League. If Kylian loses, he returns to Paris bitterly disappointed but maybe he’ll have three more chances to win it. Maybe he’ll be hurt too, it’ll be fascinating to watch.
Many people who follow Paris will want to know how they are together after the final, whether they are talking to each other or sitting next to each other.
‘Molina’s pace could stop Mbappe’
BBC Sport South American football expert
Scaloni fears France, but also thinks that his team could create some problems.
I think there will be a huge defensive responsibility on De Paul. He will have to help out and I think this is how they will try to contain Mbappé with a combination of Molina showing him down the line and De Paul preventing him from entering.
So it’s a big responsibility for De Paul. Molina is a full-back, like Theo Hernandez who is better up front than in defence.
But he’s fast so they have the pace there against Mbappé. If they show him down the line, they will trust Molina to deal with him like that and De Paul will try to block the gate if he gets in the way.

The world really is at Kylian Mbappe’s feet.
The 23-year-old will ride for France against Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Sunday with a chance of becoming the youngest player to win a second World Cup since Pelé won as a 21-year-old in 1962.
He is the tournament’s top scorer – tied on five goals with Sunday rival Lionel Messi – and has already scored nine goals in World Cup matches, making him the 15th highest goalscorer in the tournament’s history.
Indeed, only one male player in French history has scored more World Cup goals – Just Fontaine, with 13 goals, all in 1958 – as the lightning-fast Paris St-Germain striker threatens to break all records before him.
But to understand Mbappé’s love for football, you have to go back to the beginning…
